What to Wear on the Track

Nobody is standing at the gate checking your outfit. A pump track is one of the most relaxed riding environments there is. But what you wear does affect how you ride, especially once you start spending real time on the track and want to push harder.

The Basics

A helmet is non-negotiable, the same as any other riding. Beyond that, the rest is about comfort and movement. You want clothes that let you move freely without catching on anything or riding up when you crouch down into the pump position.

Padded shorts are worth it if you are going to be riding for more than half an hour at a stretch. Pump tracks are low impact but you are still in the saddle and the repetitive motion adds up.

Shoes

Flat pedals are the norm on pump tracks, so flat shoes work best. Stiff-soled skate shoes or MTB flat shoes give you better board feel than running shoes, which tend to compress too much under load. If you only have one pair of shoes, whatever you have is fine. Just avoid soft-soled trainers if you can help it.

Upper Body

A good riding tee or a lightweight hoodie covers most sessions. On warm days a breathable tee is all you need. On cooler evenings or early mornings, layering a hoodie over it keeps you comfortable without overheating.

The key thing with hoodies on a bike is fit. A hoodie that is too long or too baggy will bunch up when you get into the attack position and pull on your shoulders. A mid-length fitted cut sits better and stays out of the way.

Our pump track hoodies are cut for exactly this. They are not technical cycling kit. They are everyday wear that also works on the bike, which is kind of the whole point.

Protection

Most people ride pump tracks without any additional protection beyond a helmet. The tracks are forgiving and crashes tend to be low speed. If you are learning and expect to be going down a bit, a pair of knee pads takes the sting out of it. Elbow pads are rarely worth it on a pump track unless you are riding competitively.

Kids should wear full protection while they are learning, including wrist guards. They fall differently than adults and land on outstretched hands more often.

One Final Thing

Wear what makes you want to ride. If a fresh tee or a clean hoodie makes you more likely to grab the bike and head out, that is doing more for your riding than any piece of technical kit. The best session is the one that actually happens.
