Your first session on a pump track is exciting. It can also be a bit confusing. The track looks simple from the outside but there's actually a lot going on. Here are the things that would have helped to know from the start.
Go slower than you think you need to
Speed feels like the answer on a pump track. It isn't, at first. Your first few laps should be slow enough that you can actually feel what each feature is doing. Walk the track before you ride it. Understand where the rollers are, where the berms sit, which way the loop runs. Then ride at a pace that lets you feel the track rather than just survive it.
Learn to pump, not pedal
The whole idea is to generate speed without pedalling. You push down into the bottom of each roller and extend slightly at the top. It's a rhythm you're building, not a technique you learn once and have forever. The first few sessions it probably won't feel like it's working. Keep at it. When it clicks, it really clicks.
Look further ahead than feels natural
Staring at the roller right in front of you is the most common beginner mistake. Look to the one after it. Look toward the berm exit. Your bike goes where your eyes go, and if you're always reacting to what's immediately in front of you, you'll always feel a step behind the track.
Stay low and stay loose
Bend your knees. Bend your elbows. Stay relaxed. Tension is speed's enemy on a pump track. The riders who look effortless are almost always the most relaxed ones. They're not fighting the track, they're working with it.
One thing per lap
The loop format is brilliant for learning because you can repeat the same track over and over. Use that. Don't try to fix everything at once. Each lap, focus on one thing: the compression on a specific roller, your body position through a berm, where your weight is at the top of a feature. Progress is small and then suddenly it isn't.
The culture is friendly, ask questions
Pump track riders are a pretty welcoming crowd. If a faster rider comes up behind you, pull off and let them through. They'll appreciate it. Watch the riders who are clearly better than you and try to understand what they're doing differently. Ask if you get the chance. Almost everyone's happy to share what they know.
